DR. AKP – “The Essay” : When Academic Research Meets Afro-Fusion Storytelling

Most debut albums introduce an artist.

The Essay introduces an argument.

For Preston-based Nigerian artist, researcher and curator Dr. AKP (Ebiakpo A. Apere), music is not simply entertainment but another language through which ideas travel. Inspired by his doctoral research at the University of Central Lancashire, “The Essay” is conceived less as a conventional album and more as what its title suggests: a carefully structured body of work that examines research, identity, culture, language and belonging through contemporary African music.

The concept is immediately evident in the album’s track list. Rather than conventional titles, listeners are guided through sections such as “Abstract,” “Content,” “Review,” “Introduction,” “Discussion,” “Reference,” “Conclusion” and “Appendix.” It is an unusual creative decision, but one that gives the project its own identity. The sequencing mirrors the structure of an academic dissertation while remaining firmly rooted in popular music.

Musically, Dr. AKP resists easy categorisation.

The album draws from Afropiano,  hip-hop, rap and UK drill, blending rhythmic African percussion with contemporary urban production. Rather than moving between genres, the record allows them to coexist naturally, reflecting the multicultural environment in which the artist now creates.

One of the album’s strongest qualities is its collaborative spirit.

Every song is co-written by Dr. AKP, while production is shared with DJ Phredhy, creating a consistent sonic identity across the project. The final mixes, handled by LyquidMix, provide remarkable depth, with every track mixed in Dolby Atmos, allowing percussion, vocal layers and instrumentation to occupy an immersive three-dimensional soundscape. It is an ambitious production choice that demonstrates a commitment to professional recording standards rarely seen on independent debut projects.

Perhaps nowhere is the album’s ambition clearer than on “Reference.”

Featuring a collection of guest artists, the record moves confidently between English, French, Yoruba and Portuguese, transforming multilingualism from a stylistic choice into part of the album’s central message. Rather than presenting cultural diversity as a slogan, the song demonstrates it through performance, illustrating how language itself becomes rhythm and musical texture.

Throughout the record, Dr. AKP positions collaboration as an artistic philosophy rather than simply a feature list. Vocalists from different background contribute distinct perspectives while remaining connected by the album’s broader narrative. The result is a body of work that feels collective without losing the identity of its principal artist.

The project also reflects Dr. AKP’s wider contribution to the UK’s cultural landscape.

Outside the recording studio, he has steadily established himself as a performer, curator and community organiser, developing and contributing to the visibility of African music in the North West of England. That experience naturally informs _The Essay_ , which feels less like an isolated creative project and more like the recorded expression of an artist already engaged in building cultural conversations beyond the stage.

What distinguishes The Essay is not simply its academic inspiration but its ability to translate research into accessible music. Academic concepts are often confined to journals and conference papers; here they become stories, performances and collaborations capable of reaching audiences far beyond the university.

For a debut, the album displays notable artistic maturity. Rather than chasing trends, Dr. AKP presents a clearly defined creative identity built around research, multicultural collaboration and contemporary African musical expression. There are moments where the conceptual framework asks more of the listener than a conventional commercial release might, but that ambition is precisely what gives the project its character.

Independent artists increasingly speak about authenticity, yet few build an entire artistic practice around it. With “The Essay,” Dr. AKP offers something that feels considered, intellectually curious and musically engaging. It is a debut that suggests an artist interested not only in making records, but in expanding the possibilities of what contemporary Afro-fusion can communicate.

If this first full-length project is any indication, The Essay marks the beginning of a distinctive creative journey, one that bridges scholarship, performance and cultural exchange with confidence and originality. Officially released on 27 June and now available across all major streaming platforms, the album represents an intellectually ambitious and musically assured debut that marks not simply the arrival of a new recording artist, but the emergence of a multidisciplinary and creative practitioner..
