Maureen Adenike Okoye, professionally known as Nikz, explores warmth, movement and reassurance across the three-track “MARS” EP.
The instruments on Nikz’s “MARZ” rarely sit still. Guitars answer percussion. Trumpets rise above Amapiano basslines. Piano melodies slip between everything else. Across three songs, Nikz uses those conversations to create music that feels unusually expressive.
“Spot” begins brightly. The combination of guitar, bass and percussion immediately gives the song a celebratory quality. Its melodies are playful and sweet, but there is also something reassuring beneath them. It sounds like movement.
Not restless movement, but the feeling of going somewhere you actually want to be. It would make sense behind a holiday montage or an emotional visual sequence because the song already carries its own sense of arrival.
“Rora” is the richest arrangement on the EP. Heavy bass and Amapiano percussion establish the groove, but piano and trumpets give the song its personality. The horns are particularly expressive, pushing the record towards jazz without completely leaving the dance rhythm underneath it. Then the guitar arrives and changes the emotional temperature, with longing in those notes.
“Focus on Me” is more restrained. Soft horns and percussion gradually lead into a melody that feels almost therapeutic. The song sounds like an instruction to stop looking everywhere else and remember what matters. There is hope in it.
Nikz’s strength on MARS is her ability to translate fairly simple emotions into melodies that feel specific. You do not just hear the songs, you understand what they are trying to say.
