Which Years Gave Us the Most Nigerian Songs Above 100M Streams?

The journey to 100 million Spotify streams has not been evenly spread across the history of Nigerian music. Some years produced only a handful of records that eventually reached the milestone, while others became extraordinary hit-making periods, reflecting the rapid expansion of Nigerian music both at home and around the world.

The early years in the dataset show a relatively modest streaming footprint. 2014 produced two qualifying songs, followed by five in 2016, two in 2017 and three in 2018.

Momentum began building in 2019, with eight songs, before rising sharply to 13 in 2020. A major development came in 2021, when Spotify officially launched in Nigeria, giving listeners in one of Africa’s biggest music markets direct access to the platform. The timing coincided with a period of accelerating global interest in Afrobeats and helped create a stronger streaming ecosystem around Nigerian music. That year produced 10 songs above 100 million streams, before the numbers exploded the following year.

2022 is the clear peak, with 27 songs, more than any other year and 27% of the entire 100-song catalogue. It was a remarkable hit-making year, producing records such as “Last Last,” “Calm Down,” “Rush,” “Finesse,” “Bandana,” “Peru,” “Joha” and “MMS.”

The momentum carried into 2023, which delivered another 22 songs. Together, 2022 and 2023 account for 49% of all the qualifying songs. The numbers fall considerably afterward, with five songs from 2024 and three from 2025.

However, newer releases have had less time to accumulate streams, so these figures should not be read simply as a decline in popularity. What the timeline ultimately captures is a remarkable transformation: from a handful of 100M+ records in the 2010s to an explosion of streaming giants in the early 2020s.
