Early Life
George Chuka Nwanze was born in Festac Town, Lagos, Nigeria, and is originally from Asaba in Delta State. He is the youngest of three siblings.
He was raised in 5th Avenue, Festac Town, an environment that played a significant role in shaping his artistic imagination. Growing up in one of Lagos’ most culturally vibrant communities exposed him to music, television, fashion, cinema and street culture from an early age. His fascination with storytelling began long before music, developing through cartoons, 1990s sitcoms, television series, music videos and fashion imagery.
These early influences would later become central to his artistic identity, inspiring him to create music that extends beyond sound into visual experiences and carefully curated creative worlds.
Education
Boi George attended Christian Council Nursery and Primary School before proceeding to Festac College. He completed his secondary education at Jomal Comprehensive College in Festac Town.
He later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication from Anambra State University.
Committed to mastering every aspect of his craft, he pursued professional training across several creative disciplines. He enrolled at Tenstrings Music Institute, where he studied Music Business and Keyboard Performance, laying the foundation for both his musical knowledge and understanding of the music industry.
Driven by an increasing passion for filmmaking, he further studied Video Directing and Editing at Almendra, expanding his creative capabilities behind the camera.
He later graduated from the EbonyLife Creative Academy, specializing in Art Direction and Set Design, adding another dimension to his growing expertise in visual storytelling.
His educational journey reflects a deliberate commitment to becoming a complete creative professional rather than limiting himself to a single artistic discipline.
Early Musical Journey
Boi George’s journey into music began as a teenager while living in Festac Town. During his secondary school years, he co-founded a rap collective known as Festac’s Finest, a group that quickly gained popularity within local schools and the surrounding community.
One of the group’s most memorable recordings was a remix inspired by Young Money’s Every Girl, which became widely recognized among students and young listeners within Festac.
As members gradually relocated to pursue higher education and different career paths, the group eventually dissolved.
Rather than abandoning music, George continued writing songs independently throughout his university years. During this period, he wrote material for other emerging artists while consistently refining his songwriting by recording demonstration versions over commercially available instrumentals.
Recognizing his passion and potential, his mother enrolled him at Tenstrings Music Institute shortly after he completed secondary school, a decision that would prove instrumental in shaping his professional career.
