At the foundation of Daniels’ artistry is a commitment to authenticity, which led him to establish Dunkishrock Production, an independent label representing his musical vision. Daniels’ music is a sonic journey that can not be easily categorised. He seamlessly blends traditional Afrobeat influences with modern rock, creating a sound that is fresh, exciting and identifiably his own.

In his seventh studio album, “Dan Cain: Honesty & Nostalgia,” Nigerian-American artist Duncan Daniels delivers a thought-provoking exploration of life, love, and the human experience. This 10-track project heavily features feelings of melancholy and nostalgia, creating a rich blend of sound and emotion.

The album opens strong with “Hodor,” a track that uses the famous fable of the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf as a metaphor for building resilience in life, setting the tone for an album that’s both introspective and culturally aware.

“One Perfect Day” shoots the album into a more sombre territory, painting a picture of lost love and the yearning for a better time. This theme of nostalgia is further expressed in “Evergreen,” which features Clayrocksu’s unique vocals. The incorporation of Nigerian children’s rhymes “Tinko Tinko” and “Who’s in the Garden” adds a layer of cultural richness, while the lyrics capture the desire to return to the simplicity of childhood.

Tracks like “Leave It All” and “Candle,” take the audience deeper into themes of resilience and hope in the face of life’s challenges. “Candle” particularly stands out, using the imagery of a flickering candle flame, among other metaphors, to represent endurance through life’s dimming moments.

One of the album’s highlights is “Peacock Feather,” featuring Ajagunlabi. This track stands out not only for Ajagunlabi’s mesmerizing vocals but also for its celebration of natural beauty and the wonder of creation. It’s a moment of pure appreciation for the creator of it all, giving the audience a short break from the album’s more sombre tracks.

The album’s closing tracks – “Into the Sunset,” “Take My Hand,” and “Live Before I Die” – form a powerful conclusion. These songs progress from the idea of companionship as one attempts to escape the struggles of life, to a confrontation with mortality and the desire to live an authentic life. “Live Before I Die” is a particularly strong closer. It reflects life’s fleeting nature and the desire to start all over again.

Duncan Daniels showcases his ability to describe complex emotions and express them using alternative rock throughout “Dan Cain: Honesty & Nostalgia”. The album’s strength lies in its balance of personal introspection with universal themes that can resonate with listeners, backed up by solid artistry and notable collaborations.

While the album touches on heavy themes, it never feels overwhelmingly sombre, thanks to Daniels’ skilled songwriting and the dynamic range of the tracks. The inclusion of Nigerian cultural elements adds a unique flavour to the alternative rock sound, setting this album apart in the genre.

“Dan Cain: Honesty & Nostalgia” showcases Duncan Daniels’ growth as an artist. The album invites multiple listens, revealing new layers with each play. Fans of alternative rock who appreciate thoughtful lyrics and cultural fusion will find much to enjoy in this emotional and nostalgic journey.
