The Headies Makes a U-turn to Host its 17th Edition in Nigeria

The Headies Award boasts as the most prestigious award recognising outstanding talents, artists and bodies of work in the Nigerian music industry. Formerly known as the Hip Hop World Awards, the first edition was held in 2010, and ever since, more editions have been held annually except in 2017 and 2020.

As one would expect—due to the origin of the awards, particularly because it aims to celebrate, honour and promote Nigeria’s music culture to the world—all the editions have been hosted in Nigeria, until 2022 and 2023 when the 15th and 16th editions of The Headies Award were held at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

This development was not only surprising but rather disappointing and bewildering. The Headies received backlash, and a lot of questions arose. Why would the biggest Nigerian award ceremony be hosted outside Nigeria? Could it be an inferiority complex of thinking that somehow the award would raise more buzz if it was held in a foreign country? Was it simply a marketing stunt?

We don’t have the answers, and whatever the reason is, it is gratifying to know The Headies have found their feet back on the right path and are willing to walk in it for the 17th edition.
