Skinny Skater Explores Love, Betrayal, and Urban Chaos on “Close to Home” [EP Review]

Markson Promise Ikenna, known professionally as Skinny Skater, is a rising star in the afrobeat sub-genre, Afro-Fusion. Born and raised in Nigeria, the talented singer-songwriter is developing his own space in the music industry. Skinny Skater’s musical journey began when his music-loving father exposed him to diverse genres, laying the foundation for his innovative sound, which seamlessly fuses various influences into a captivating style.

Drawing heavy inspiration from icons like Michael Jackson and Kanye West, Skinny Skater has developed a familiar sonic palette, yet original. His music is characterised by emotive songwriting that draws deeply from his experiences, creating a natural connection with his audience.

Signed to Louiversal Music, Skinny Skater is positioned to make an even bigger impact on the global music scene. However, for this artist, music is more than just a career. It’s a personal journey and a means of self-expression. Skinny Skater aims to offer new perspectives.

The artist has recently dropped a 5-track EP titled “Close to Home,” showcasing his take on Afro-Fusion.  This EP is a testament to Skinny Skater’s ability to blend infectious rhythms with lighthearted lyrics, creating a sound that’s both exciting and agreeable. “Close to Home” is a vivid exploration of love, relationships, and personal growth built upon the foundation of Lagos’ urban landscape. Incredible beats, unique vocals, and relatable lyrics stand out throughout the EP, creating a coherent yet diverse listening experience.

The EP opens with the track “No Love in Lagos,” which immediately grabs attention with its outstanding beat, a trend that continues throughout all the tracks on the project. Skinny Skater paints a picture of Lagos as a city that is unconducive to love and populated by players and users. His stance on preferring one-night stands over relationships in this environment is boldly stated, setting a tone of self-preservation amidst urban chaos.

The next track, “R. Kelly” focuses on the theme of betrayal, with Skinny Skater addressing a two-faced lover. The artist cleverly incorporates a controversial allusion to R. Kelly’s legal troubles, using it as a metaphor for “pissing on his enemies.” This track showcases Skinny Skater’s ability to weave current events into his creative narratives.

In a shift of tone, “Irreplaceable” is an ode to a woman beyond comparison. Skinny Skater’s vocals shine on this track, as he expresses the futility of finding someone to fill this woman’s shoes. A recurring theme in the EP, evidenced boldly by this track, is an appreciation for women with “Ikebe” (big buttocks), which adds a touch of playful sensuality to the mix.

“Ghana Must Go” sees Skinny Skater in a more introspective mood, singing about personal struggles and the conscious decision to change his reality. This track stands out for its emotional depth, as the artist requests better treatment from lovers, hinting at past hurts and a desire for a better state of mind.

The EP concludes with “Sometimes,” a love song that initially contradicts the sentiments expressed in the opening track. Here, Skinny Skater opens his heart to the possibility of a meaningful relationship, describing the kind of woman he’d consider for more than just a night. However, the surprise twist at the end of this track adds a layer of complexity to the artist’s views on love, bringing the EP full circle.

“Close to Home” is a compelling display of Skinny Skater’s artistry within the Afro-Fusion genre. The EP successfully balances catchy beats with meaningful lyrics, offering listeners a wide exploration of modern relationships. From the cynicism of “No Love in Lagos” to the vulnerability of “Ghana Must Go,” Skinny Skater takes us on an emotional journey.
