On ‘ÓMÀSHE’, Femi JR Is An Unhinged Force of Nature [Review]

On the 10th of May, 2024, Nigerian Hip-Hop act Femi JR continued his eclectic form with the single, ‘ÓMÀSHE‘. It serves as a follow-up to the more impassioned ‘Love‘, released in February 2024.

The song’s title is a Yoruba expression which translates to ‘It’s a pity’. It is a fitting one, as the artist spotlights the need to relentlessly brace life’s constant hurdles. With a catchy, upbeat hook, Femi JR draws listeners into the never-ending battle to make the most out of life. While he presumably reflects the perspective of upcoming artistes, the sentiment is one that many can relate to.

Ómàshe, ómàshe shey‘/’Oh my days, oh my days days‘/’Everyday, no vacation‘/’Dem dey play, koleyewon

Femi JR relies on a tried-and-tested formula with a sung hook, laden with elements of Drill. He opens the single-versed record with the definitive lines:

I came, I saw, and someday soon I’d conquer

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday to Sunday, I dey find food like hustler

Once I leave my crib, I cut my leash and woof like monster

Paid my dues like three and four times, I need to recoup my funds back

His creative writing shines on the record, perfectly complimenting his punchy delivery. He raps:

You go need lose my number

If you no dey talk about numbers

See how I dey shoot like Trossard

Tell ’em make they look their scorecard

Within the song’s 2:17 breath, Femi JR renders a handful of quotables. The most notable is a note of warning, going thus:

Because I want my peace don’t mean I’m running from smoke

At the tail end of ‘ÓMÀSHE‘, a different dimension to the title rears its head. The relentless nature of the grind is pitiable. However, the same goes for those who dare to complicate things.

ÓMÀSHE‘ may or may not be the cornerstone in Femi JR’s upcoming album, PEACE & LOVE. Nonetheless, it is a well-crafted Hip-Hop record indicative of even better things to come from the artiste.
