ShugaVybz: The Recording and Production Maestro (Exclusive Interview)

ShugaVybz’s ascent through the heights of the industry has not only been based on the opportunities he has earned to work with big names in crafting their chart topping singles, but also how much he has subjected himself to personal development of his twin talent of producing and recording his songs all by himself.

While not many creatives can boast of these abilities, Shugavybz has optimized himself to become a maestro in both areas, with visible and undeniable progress in both aspects. With a solid production catalogue that does well to match his discography of quality records, Shugavybz reminds us of the masterclass he can pull on his own day with his latest single “Ifeoma” featuring Boypee.

A member of the Album Talks team caught up with the act virtually after the release of his latest single to discuss his creative abilities, career and expectations for his latest single.

Tell us a little about your background, how it was like growing up and your immediate family.

I’m the firstborn in a family of six. To be very honest, while I was growing up, I got all the support I wanted from my family in everything I did. It’s been same till now, they support me in every step I make, and that’s one of thing I always appreciate.

How did you find music as a very tangible thing to do?

My family is music. My parents are well versed in music  They listened to a lot of artistes back then when I was growing up. So it’s safe to say I came from a place where music is a habit. Although I started with football, but now it’s music full time. The likelihood for music has always been there though.

Who were your musical idols and influences while growing up, and those you admire now?

My parents and every artist they fan while I was growing. My parents really decided the sounds we listened to, and those influences caught up with me over time, and till today, they’re my reset. Those times were memorable, and were the foundation to everything happening now.

You have a solid catalogue as a producer, how did that come about?

Oh my, that wasn’t easy. Although, I will say it was just a matter of consistency and being with the right people at the right time. I learned a lot from people, and developed myself as well. That way, I was able to take hold of opportunities, and today its all going well.

When did you start music professionally and what fueled your decision to delve into music?

Well, this is a two edged question. First, I have been a producer for over twelve years now. But for the music thing, officially, it was four years ago. Although very funny, but my fans should know that my mom made me quit football for music. That’s the reason you have me here today giving you the best music.

Your musical and production skill, how do you manage them both? Do you lean towards one than the other ?

It’s not easy combining both really. My manager have been helpful with this making sure that I attend to both equally. However, I feel like I’m spending more time lately grooming the young artist of four years old.

How will you describe your sound and how it makes you unique as an artist? Does your artistic sound also influence your production works?

I will describe my sound as “sweet melody”. That’s what birth the name Shugavybz. I am a very versatile artist who can head in any direction I deem fit artistically. About mixing my production and artistic capabilities, I’ll say they intertwine a lot. My artistic sound influences my production and vice versa.

You have been in this music journey for a while. What are your lessons learned?

The number one lesson the industry thought me is help yourself before you help others. Also, keep working and developing yourself even when no one is watching you. The truth is there is always someone is watching and in real time, the struggles will pay off.

Your new single “Ifeoma”. What was the inspiration behind the record, also share with us the lowdown of the recording session.

Ifeoma was formerly a free beat I dropped on my Freebeat YouTube page. Boy Pee saw it and called me that we should make a song with it, and that’s how we got here. We linked up, recorded the song in one take and it was magical. Boypee is my childhood friend and school mate so I guess that it was pretty easy to get it done.

What are your expectations with the record?

Omo, it’s global hit and recognition. I’m not taking anything less.

What are your next plans for growth or to move to the next level in your music career?

There is more music and projects coming out soon after “Ifeoma”. Full packages coming soon, just get ready. I’m never stopping here, and I know there’s a lot more to do.

If you could have your wish now, which artists will you love to work with?

I don’t discriminate as I believe everyone is talented. I will love to work with everyone though when the opportunity presents itself. I’m an FC, so of course you know who comes first.

Leave a message for your fans.

I love every single one of you and I will never seize to make you all happy with my music, keep supporting me in every way you can.
