What are our expectations when African powerhouses collaborate on a record ? The answer is not far fetched given we have precedents of this kind. Master KG’s “Jerusalema“, Zanda Zakuza on “Skeleton Move“, the Burna assisted remix of “Yaba Buluku“and even much more recently Angelique Kidjo and Davido’s duet on “Joy“, to mention a few, are all standout records that united artists from various parts of Africa together.
Once again, “META” follows in line as a culture and genre blending release that brings together three powerhouses from different regions of Africa. Fireboy DML brings the Nigerian dance flows, Nomcebo Zikode taps into South African soul, and Sofiya Nzau adds the Kenyan spiritual touches, into the record that accommodates and blends their unique styles for a record well steeped in celebrating the diversity of African culture.
With the title adapted from the native Yoruba Language, which is translated as “Three“, the record also follows similar sentiments as Fireboy crafts the hook singing of how his blessings now come in three.
As the title suggests, “META” reflects a powerful convergence of cultures, inspired by the number three—a symbol of harmony, balance, and connection across many traditions.
On “META“, Nomcebo Zikode leads the proceedings, channelling her soulful edge to usher in listeners in the early seconds, the modern dance influences can be heard already before the African percussions kicks in, and Fireboy DML joins in along.
Fireboy DML eases himself in, going with his energy but also complementing Nomcebo’s rhythm. Sofiya Nzau locks in last with a free-spirited verse that brings the house down and adds just the needed breather.
While the record bears so many cultural hallmarks of its own, it is also noteworthy of the 3 Step genre that typified its production. “META” in itself is a vibrant fusion of Afrobeat, R&B, House and traditional African rhythms, capturing the essence of a modern, united Africa.
However, the raving 3 Step genre is the latest subgenre fast rising to global appeal with its style of combining African rhythms with modern dance elements. This innovative style leaves the record fresh and unique from previous Afro-House records the continent has produced.
On “META“, we witness such a diverse and unique record in how Nomcebo, Fireboy and Sofiya all combine together for a record that amplifies each other’s strength, and the producer’s creativity. The record was produced by the South African Producer/DJ TorQue MuziQ, who is well known for his contribution to the sub genre.
Again, what do we expect when three African powerhouses collaborate on a record? “META” encapsulates all our answers. This collaboration pushes musical boundaries, merging deep-rooted African sounds with contemporary production techniques. The result, however, is a unique soundscape that pays homage to Africa’s rich cultural heritage while embracing innovation.
“META” is more than just music—it’s a celebration of African culture and an invitation to come together. Pulling artists and their sonic vibrations from different parts of the continents, the record also achieves its intention of uniting various listeners and connecting them together through the music. It’s good times ahead for the African music scene.
