Since exploding onto the landscape of the rapidly growing Irish music scene with crew TFClique, The Nigerian-born and Irish raised artist Tommy Tomad has been paving the way for the Afrobeats movement in the Island of Ireland, transforming the Irish music scene with his enchanting and magical take on Afrobeats.
Tommy Tomad’s unorthodox approach sees him steer towards a melodic articulation of the experience rather than lyricism leading the listener through a heartfelt and emotional journey. While he made his debut with the ‘Sweet Dreams Tape’, he has made some memorable highlights of supporting seasoned acts like Adekunle Gold, Oxlade, Wande Coal and more.
Poised for the end of the year and the beginning of a new one, we caught up with the act who has made it a goal to push Afrobeats on his own front in Ireland. In the conversation, we flow into his early years and how he transitioned into an artist whose work has won the heart of fans all over.
Tell us a little about your background, how it was like growing up and your immediate family.
Growing up was fun and I think it played a major role in me becoming an artist. I grew up in a musical household where we sing and dance. All my siblings were in a dance group at church and try as much as possible to involve ourselves in music activities in church. This translated in me going in on dance freestyle battles every Friday evening after school. This foundation was very important in what I do now. The musical sensibilities I possess have been built since way back.
How did you find music as a very tangible thing to do?
I wouldn’t say I found it as tangible, but more or less of it being my way of life from young. It feels like I’m supposed to do this. I felt it in my guts every time, and I know it strongly.
Who were your musical idols and influences while growing up, and those you admire now?
My musical idols are Paul play, Wande Coal, P-Square, Banky W, Chris brown and of course MJ. I admire a lot of artists now from the likes of the Big 3 to the new generation stars like Fireboy DML, Oxlade, Rema, Asake. These guys are the real guys, and in a way, they have influenced me.
When did you start music professionally and what fueled your decision to delve into music?
I started music professionally as Tommy Tomad in 2018. What fueled my decision is basically the love for the art. I’m just obsessed with creating great art, whether sonically or visually, as long as it brings out my intended vision.
How will you describe your sound and how it makes you unique as an artist?
My sound is Afrobeats/Afro Fusion. Although, I believe my music has its own persona. My music is that kind of lover-boy music with an attitude. It’s different, and it’s quite obvious.
You have been in this music journey for a while, what are your lessons learned? Share with us some of your lowest and highest points.
What I have learned so far is that you should not stop because you don’t feel like it. As long as you still wake up with fresh ideas, the sky is your starting point. One of my lowest points will be forgetting the gift I have sometimes. I think that as creatives, we have to remind ourselves of who we are sometimes and dwell on it.
One of my highest points was when I met Wande coal, and I had the opportunity to hear some of the songs from the “Wanted” album before the release and also “Iskaba” a few months before its official release .
You released two singles this year. How has the year been for you ?
It’s been great. I believe slow and steady wins the race. I’m not tryna be here for a short time but for a long time. I’m taking my time, working on creating good stuff that will resonate with my audience. I’m chill, but I’m also confident.
What are your next plans for growth or to move to the next level in your music career?
At the moment, I’m working on an EP which is almost ready for the new year. I am excited about that and a whole lot of other stuff I got coming. Next year will be amazing, as there are loads coming.
If you could have your wish now, which artists will you love to work with?
Well, I’ll say Wizkid and Chris brown. They are my top artists now, and a collaboration with either of them will really make me glad. I mean it’s Wizkid and Chris Brown.
Leave a message for your fans
